Its 2011 - WHAT IMPROVEMENT would you like to see in the industry

By Miss Tilii

So if you ask any nollywood or ghana movie director or even interview any actress or actor (at least from ghana or nollywood) and Ask them - "So what is the biggest challenge or why do you think after 10 odd years, Nollywood has not climbed up reach the international hollywood level" - they are always quick to say "because of funding - we lack funding".

Funding? really - are you sure its "JUST" because of funding or is it because of lack of creativity for better script, poor direction by the people directing the movie and the so many other things you dont want to talk about.

You trying to tell me, if i gave you $10 million dollars (since you like quoting in dollars yet living in Africa) to shoot a blockbuster movie worthy of oscar level and give you 6 mnths to shoot it, you will then do it better. Really? using which script? Royal Theme movie, Campus or Aristos scripts - which one? lol - I mean i will even feel better if you stood up and said "Yes We need Help Hollywood, not just funding, But come show us how its really done". I am sure someone will be willing to come down and help.

If simple things, such as credits of names or movie titles are being mispelt, what has that got to do with funding - It simply means you dont care about editing or nor have a good eye for detail to check the movie you are putting out on the market - because you want to do it quick and push it out for sale and get your return as fast as possible - you dont give an ish what the audience thinks (I mean people like Ugezu has said it himself in an interview).

What does a foolish title such as BLACKBERRY BABES (or is it IPHONE BABES??) got to do funding, I ask you?

Its 2011 and you still coming out with movies with ridiculous funny titles - breaking the movie into 4 parts (be it the producer, the director, the marketer or the distributors fault) naming Part 1 & 2 one name and part 3 & 4 another name, and you talking about funding?. Really? Are you justifying your breaking the movie into 4 or 5 parts as your lack of funding? You must think we some kinda fools.

Guys (and i am talking to the not so good producers like Nonso Ekene Okonkwo, Venus Production, Socrates Sarfo, Ugezu Ugezu and the likes - the ones who DO NOT care for quanlity or classics and only care for quatity they can shoot in a week package and push out on the market for us fools to buy) - Just really sit down and ponder on this question of whether its really boils down to funding. Dont blame just funding - people like Izu Ojukwu, Kwaw Ansah, Emem Isong, Shirley Frimpong Manso, Vivian Ejike, the many many excellent producers in SA, Kenya etc etc can make that blame claim - but not you.

And its so funny the ones with lack of creativity or vision to grow and improve are always the ones to scream about funding.

What has having a good script got to do with any funding? Do you know the amount of Oscar nominated movies that got nominated for their great movies with the least budget of shooting that movie?

You can give a non-creative illiterate $100 million dollars and give another person who cares for great script and quality movies which can reach oscar level, just $50,000 - and I guarantee you - you can always tell the best from the rest.

So all am saying - I dont agree with you when you solely blame funding - lets not beat around the bush. You are not creative and dont care about the art of movies and creating quality movies. You care for quantity.
.
THIS IS 2011 - ENOUGH IS ENOUGH- IT iS ABOUT TIME THE AUDIENCE SPEAK UP AND LET MANY OF THESE "SO CALLED" PRODUCERS/DIRECTORS WHO HAVE SATURATED THE MARKET, AND STILL PUTTING OUT JUNK MONTH AFTER MONTH (AFTER ALL THESE YEARS) AND EXPECTING US TO BUY IT. DEMAND QUALITY.

Some of them will argue - "Oh we havent said we are aiming for HOLLYWOOD level, we are simply doing home movies to cater or those who care for such" - Well first of all that is where you are wrong and this is the reason why africans are always far behind. We always think of today and what we will put in our stomach - It sometimes seems too difficult for some of us to think too far ahead (short sighted mentality)

Where do you want to see your self 10 years from now. And also ask your self - in the past 10 years where are your revenues and returns coming from? It is coming from the diaspora right? Ok in that case dont you think the least you can do is listen to our plea and make some changes to your scripts, production and direction - instead of simply being so short sighted. And 2nd of all if you are going to brag of being the 2nd largest to Hollywood (which to me has to do with just QUANTITY so lets not get that twisted and blow our horns) then we beg of you to try to aim high with better scripts - other wise dont dare compare or brag about being 2nd largest - Abeg 2nd largest of WHAT??????

APART FROM IMPROVEMENT OF SOUND AND PICTURE QUALITY AS COMPARED TO 10 YEARS AGO, WE DEMAND BETTER SCRIPTS AND BETTER DIRECTION AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD EDIT YOUR MOVIES. GIVE THE AUDIENCE SOME RESPECT! AND STOP INSULTING OUR INTELLIGENCE WITH YOUR JUNK MOVIES.
.
I'd rather watch 10 quality movies in a year than 100 foolish movies in a year.

Miss Tilii's List of What she wants to see improved - and dont forget even with mymany critiques of the lackluster bunch of directors/producers, I never ever forget to commend the good ones who are making an effort to take it up a notch with quality- and I am always first to make noise about any GREAT releases they put out - because i want them to be successful and entertain us more:

-Better Scripts

-EDIT EDIT EDIT

-We want Better Direction - take your time before you scream ACTION!!

-For our top favourites like Genevieve, Rita, Kate, OmoT, Majid, etc try and challenge them and help them grow as actors - to me many of the names listed have hit a glass ceiling where most producers dont know what to do with their increased talent -they just use them to sell their movies - but thank God "some" of these actors/actresses are being "smart" and not saying Yes to every script regardless of how much they will be paid thus why we see less of them in movies anually. Like i said if Martin Scorcese did not challenge Leonardo Di Carprio movie after movie he would not have grown to be where he is at. Challenge them with better scripts for crying out loud.

-We want Diverse new talented actors who can REALLY ACT, other than the top 10-12 we have - The RECYCLING at some point needs to stop. We want to see new actors/actresses who really know how to bring on the emotions and not just look pretty/handsome on screen.

-We want new DIRECTORS, PRODUCERS who know what they are doing, and of course more better scripts ( i cant say enough about the scripts). Just cos you got money doesnt mean you should produced a movie or direct a movie - you are better off giving the money to someone who knows what he / she is doing and they give you credit for the funding (yall know who am talking about - the money miss road producers).

-Tell the story in 120 or less minutes all on 1 DVD and dont break it up into so many parts - I guess putting it in four parts is cost effective to you than putting it on one huh??? yeah right.

-The baffonery of ridiculous titles has got to stop - its not funny anymore - loose the ROYAL blah blah and the BABES blah blah nonsensical titles. Chei! ogini? - Be Serious and we may take you serious and give your works some respectable recognition it deserves.

- Warning to producers slowing showing too much skin (ghana) and allowing too much swear words (fck, shyt, nigga etc) - The emulating of Yankee is too much - just leave it alone - it doesnt suit you.

I dont want to see booty cracks and nipples and hear too much swear words. If i want to see booty cracks and nipples, i will subscribe to Vivid entertaiment. Even if you put 18 ratings on the box, C''mon, kids can get a hold of it in the market back home with no ID needed.

The whole reason africa movies became popular amonst africans in the diaspora is the uniqueness and how one can relate to the culture - Many in the diaspora watch african movies to escape and it reminds them of home. So if they are hearing so much swear words and seeing booty cracks and soft porn type movies, what is that all about.? I could go to borrow "Menace II Society" from blockbuster video and hear better swear words with no LAFA (locally acquired foreign accent) -Please Lets try and be unique and stick to our moral values that makes us different - We are Africans First. You crawl, you walk then you run - Not crawl, then gbam! you want to run.

-Leave the foreign currency calling in movies alone (Dollars Pounds and Euro)- I heard someone say in a movie " They seized my container of goods worth Two Hundred Million Thousand Dollars" and they looked so retarded saying it but i guess the illiterate director didnt catch that cos obviously he didnt edit lol- I was thinking "what the hell is two hundred million thousand dollars?)- We are africans -our currencies are neither Dollars, Euro or Pounds. Leave names like Rihanna, Beyonce, Ciara, Kiesha names alone and use african names and if you are going to use it at least pronounce it right. We as Africans have beautiful names we should be proud of. Though ridiculous movies like White Hunters and Blackberry Babes were somewhat meant to be comedic, I was just embarassed watching it - I mean if you are watching with a foreign (eg American) friend - how do you even explain such? "Effing for Blackberrys, what is that?? lol, is that like "Effing for Roles in Nollywood" or ppl in US music industry "Effing for Tracks" as they say (i.e Cassie and ems lol lol lol -ok let me stop)

-I will add more later -

. This is an open discussion and every one can give constructive comments on what you think about this issue. Tell us what you think about the industry and what you will like to see improved moving forward

The below comment was made by my regular blog visitor called Chatter Box and I think she couldnt have said it any better.

  1. I started watching nigerian and ghanaina movies around 2001/2...and i feel actually in terms of scripts and characters things have not improved at all., The movies back then had a story/ a lesson/ good entertainment value and the actors were articulate and good on the eye (in my opinion). not that we do not have that now but it still amazes me that in 2011 a movie can still have an ending that does not make sense or is unbefitting to the story.

  2. I would like to add to that Good Direction, we need directors who actually have a 'vision' and actually 'want' to tell a story...purrrlease this is 2011, i am not impressed with fancy zooming left to right..wide angles etc...we need them to bring out the best in our actors such that they are unrecognisable in the roles....

  3. Talking of characters...can we have more rounded characters...growth and development please...costumes. make up ...SETS!!!..you can't tell me that this is a kings palace..when its shaped like a car (or is it a plane??) and you use it over and over again...same applies to billionaires etc...

  4. Soundtrack (that actually complements the scene)...please no more singing of the storyline..soundin like you are being strangled or a donkey giving birth...and yes...we could do with not straining to hear what is being said because the music is too loud...

  5. Good supporting actors..how many times have i had to see someone who appears to have walked of the street onto the set acting like a doctor, nurse, secretary etc...when setting the budget please dont forget these supporting actors...they may not be important in the movie but they do make an impact..

  6. Please oh! get straight to the point. i dont need to see someone reverse their car to know they have left, to walk for 10 mins screaming and crying to know they are in labour, dance for 10 mins to know that they r in a club, unncessary shopping scenes to know he loves her and vice versa..... (didnt mean to go one but this is a burning issue with me too )

Thank You Chatter Box- You said it best. I am just sitting here just remembering Court Scenes and Hospital Scenes - it has not changed in 10 yrs. Same bandage on head after 3 days, no change of clothes even if one got into a bloody accident - just bandage her and all the supposed dirty clothes together and call it a day. We dont have time lol

Oh my gosh this post is going to be hella funny . Here is another comment from another anonymous post;

Well Miss Tilli And Chatter Box You Both Have Said It All,We Need People Going Into Film Production To Take Their Time, Pay Attention To Detail No Matter How Little (E.G A Female Surgeon Who Has Long Acrylic Nails Or Calls Her Patients 'Clients' Or Nurses With 4inch Heels).

We Need Better Scripts(And Script Writers), Directors, Editing, Sound Technicians. This Is Not An All-Comers Affair Where A Boom Mic Operator Feels He Can Produce, Direct And Edit A Movie After Just One Week On Another Set. Some Changes Are Long Overdue....

I Hope They Come Pretty Soon. How Do We Expect To Compete With Hollywood And The Rest Of The World If They Keep Trifling?

It is funny that i still go back to the guy who sends me movies and i give him a list of all the old movies that i need to watch them. I love the old movies, they were so good and the stories were so perfect...nowardays, even though the picture quality and sound have improved, i must confess the movie title and story lines are stupid and dumb as hell. I just home we get better things in the future.

The chatter box said it all point one other issue that troubles me: wedding scenes, Burial Scenes, and Party Scenes, I am talking from the Brides gown to the grooms suit, the congregation, crowd at the party, their outfits etc. We need to put in more effort into editing.

Is there a website or company or somewhere that screens scrits for nollywood, perhaps that could be a solution to getting better stories out there. their are scriptwriters who know what they are doing but ofetn do not have links to the industry
